New York Yankees – The Road to the Top

Aren’t you glad that the baseball season has begun? If there is one team you need to watch this season, and make an effort to see in live action, it’s definitely has to be the New York Yankees. They not only have a vibrant history but also have a bright future.

New York Yankees is one of the most dominating and famous baseball organizations in the world. Originally known as the Baltimore Orioles, they moved to New York City after their 1902 season. They were the New York Highlanders until 1913 and later they came to be known as the New York Yankees. Since their inception, they have won 26 World Series Titles, 39 American League Pennants and 15 Division Titles and all these accomplishments have made them one of the most successful teams in the history of baseball.

Most of today’s fans, however, attribute the team’s fame to the name of Babe Ruth. In the view of many, he single handedly contributed the most to the team worldwide recognition. Initially, the Babe belonged to Boston Red Sox but he was later traded to the Yankees in 1919. There is no denying that Ruth helped the team, along with baseball, to reach new heights. But no single person could have generated the long term success this team has enjoyed for almost a century. Other players also deserve the credit for the level of notoriety the team commands. History shows that the Yankees team gave birth to the Murderer’s Row, a line up led by Babe Ruth. Many sports pundits have said that this was the strongest line in 1930s. Babe Ruth was followed by several other talented players such as Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio.

Now, let us consider how far the team has come. After the departure of Torre, the New York Yankees signed Joe Girardi as the new coach in 2008. He has managed to continue the tradition of balance and excellence that the team is known for. The 2010 season will be remembered for the rivalry between New York Yankees and the Red Sox. This was the first time since 1950 that they started and finished the season against each other. On April 12, 2013 they made their second triple play in a home game but they lost to Tampa Bay Rays for the second time on September 25, 2013.
